Let’s Talk Facial Lines and Volume Loss

Volume Loss

Facial deflation most commonly occurs in the midface/cheek area and thus we start to see deeper lines in the lower third of our face as our cheeks descend and become jowls. As a result, we start to look more tired and perhaps sad. Many of the injectable dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid based – just like the molecules in our skin. When injected, it helps to ‘plump’ the skin and give it a smoother, more voluminous appearance.*  Other fillers are made up of calcium hydroxylapatite, a substance naturally found in the body. In addition to other non-surgical treatment options – dermal fillers are an excellent way to address deflation and see very gratifying, immediate results.*

Fillers last anywhere from 6-9 months (Restylane and Juvederm) to 2 or more years (Sculptra) – depending on the amount of correction and type of filler used.* Common areas to treat are cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, and hands. Dr. Abraham thinks of fillers as “icing on the cake” or a great option for a quick solution.* We use a variety of dermal fillers at Sherwood Aesthetic Medicine including: The Juvederm family, The Restylane family, and Sculptra Aesthetic.

Expression Lines Become Wrinkles

While wrinkles caused by gravity and decreasing amounts of collagen in the skin are best treated with volumizing treatments (dermal fillers or fillers, for short); the wrinkles caused by expression (frowning, scowling, concentrating, smiling & more) can be addressed with neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport. Neuromodulator treatments require maintenance as the relaxation effect on the treated muscle begin to wear off in about 3-4 months for most patients.* Over time with regular treatments, the lines will continue to improve as the muscles are used less and less.

Botox and Dsyport are especially effective in reducing the horizontal forehead lines that we see when we look surprised, the frown lines between the eyebrows (“the elevens”) and “smile lines” or “crow’s feet”. What many people don’t realize is that you don’t have to be “frozen” after a treatment. Dr. Abraham has ways to artfully soften those lines without looking unnatural.
